![]() Being ranged doesn't guarantee that you can just stand there and be a turret. Obviously melee characters need to think about positioning, but the same is true for ranged builds where they may have to contend with cover, range increments, line of sight issues etc. I don't have a list on hand but as I recall the two highest DPR builds are dual light-pick fighter (melee) and wild shape fighter (also melee). Based on what we know so far it seems promising. If you're interested in eldritch archer and not immediately starting a campaign, I'd recommend waiting to see how the finalized ranged magus variant turns out in August instead. When it hits it's still just okay partially because there's so little variety to your turns. You dump your whole turn into one roll and do literally nothing else. Even if it's mathematically fine (which idk if it is), it feels bad compared to other interesting uses of the three action system. A three action commitment on a core ability feels bad. The eldritch archer has pretty much the exact same problem that the play test magus had. Given what we've seen of the magus so far, it seems to me like they were using the eldritch archer to test out some of the earlier concepts, particularly spell strike (eldritch shot). The eldritch archer is an old dnd mainstay with a great theme. ![]() At a higher level I also like the combination of precision edge, double prey, and penetrating shot for a lot of bang for your buck while positioning very tactically. ![]() With something like a bird you get the interesting options of more damage via attacks or debuffs via support, and you can set up flanks for your allies. That might be cheating though since throwing your companion into melee sort of makes you a partially melee character. I think ranger is a bit more dynamic than fighter if you do ranger with an animal companion.
